Memorable dates of the Great Patriotic War. 80 years of liberation of Belarus
Students of the Minsk Radio Engineering College took part in a round table on the topic: “Memorable dates of the Great Patriotic War. 80 years of liberation of Belarus" and a thematic film screening of the film "Forgetting the Latvian Sniper"
The event brought together activists of public associations and organizations, trade union workers, students, and nine districts of the capital also joined the broadcast.
Each speaker shared his opinion on the importance of preserving historical memory and told the stories of his ancestors related to the war. These thoughts turned out to be especially valuable for the younger generation – boys and girls who grew up under a peaceful sky, like no one else, should understand how important and valuable it is to preserve this peaceful sky and prevent a repetition of the horrific events of the last century.
After the discussion, the participants watched the competition film “Forget the Latvian Sniper” directed by Andrei Yakovlev.
This film tells about the fate of the Hero of the Soviet Union – sniper of the 43rd Guards Latvian Rifle Division Janis Vilhelms, who was also awarded the highest award of the US Army. But life made adjustments to the scenario: in Latvia they began to demolish monuments to those who, like Wilhelms and his comrades, fought and defeated Nazism. Waffen-SS legionnaires who swore allegiance to Hitler began to be considered heroes. To forget the Latvian sniper means to betray Memory, to betray ourselves.
